Quick Lightroom Tip

Due to all the excitement around Lightroom 4, I thought I would share an awesome keystroke tip that helps me get farther faster in Lightroom when making local adjustments.  For those of you that don’t know what I’m talking about, Lightroom is known as a global editor, which means that any edits applied happen to the entire photo.  The way to make local adjustments (only effect a certain area) is to use the adjustment brush.  If you have never used this feature, you are totally missing out.  Below is a youtube video on how to use it.  This posting is how to speed up the cleaning up process through keystrokes and here are those:

Adjustment brush:  K

Make brush bigger: ]

Make brush smaller: [

Turn Auto Mask on and off: Control A

With between the Brush and Erase: Hold down the Alt

The last two keystrokes are ultra useful in speeding up workflow, and help your hand from cramping by saving you having to go back and forth from your image to your panel to switch between paint and erase.  A key point is when to use and when not to use the Auto Mask Feature.  That function needs help from your image for it to work correctly, and by help, I mean your image needs to have a contrasty edge.  That contrast edge, is what keeps the auto mask in its place when brushing.

Here is brushing along the edge using no auto mask:

Here is the same image using auto mask.

The last keystroke tip I would like to share is how you can see the overlay (green in this case) to see what you are painting for the mask.  Most people go down to the bottom, and always turn this on and off by checking ht xbox on and off.

Image

Instead, use the letter O on you keyboard for overlay to turn it off and on.  If you ware wondering how I switched my overlay color from that awful rosy pink, to this equally awful lime green, you hit Shift and the O key.  That will cycle you through the overlay color choices which are as follows:

It may be a little cumbersome at first using the keystrokes, but believe me, once under control and handled in your mind, these key strokes help speed up your local adjustment capabilities like you wouldn't believe. In the above images, I used this capability to make the white background go pure white L:100 for future clipping into websites or to load a false background easily.

Happy Masking,

Carlos

Canon 5d Mark iii DSLR – Let the Pandemonium Ensue!

I was about to go to sleep and just doing my one millionth email check of the day when beep, new message from Adorama about da da dum, the pre-order of the Canon 5d Mark iii.  Yes, this is the predecessor to the infamous Canon 5d Mark ii.  I don’t have access (though I should right) to this camera yet, but based on the specs, new higher iso ( ISO 25600) means even more crazy night and low light photos.  Light painters rejoice!  The terrible terrible auto focus of the Mark ii is fixed which is another prayer to the photo gods answered.  I can’t wait to use one, but at $3499.00 I’m gonna need some help.  So if any of you out there want to contribute to the get Carlos Arrieta a 5d Mark iii fund, I’m now taking donations!

Click on image below to reserve yours.

Adobe Photoshop Touch for iPad 2

Hey all, I’m super excited to hear that Photoshop Touch is finally coming to the iPad 2 tomorrow.  You guessed it, it is photoshop with layers, masking, and text layouts for the iPad. I would like to say the reason it took so long was Adobe wasn’t on the ball, but it actually is an even worse reason.  They took their sweet time to throw mud onto Apple due to their tiff (haha get it).  They had a flash disagreement and haven’t released this even though it has been available on Androids platform for a while.  But yay, we are finally getting it tomorrow for $9.99.  It only works on the ipad2 due to processing needs, so sorry all you Gen. 1 users.  It also has a new tool called scribble selections which are perfect for getting precise selections and masks without the fuss (check out the video below to see it in action).

I don’t know why I’m so excited since this just means I will be ding photoshop at home, at work, and on the go now.  All they need to do now is figure out how to have me be able to do photoshop while I sleep.  Call it, the sleepy selection tools.

Keep it fun – C.

Platinum Printing Classes Coming Very Soon!

Hey Everyone, I just submitted my class proposals to Rayko Photo Center for the platinum palladium printing classes.  Yes, there is more than one.  One class will be digital negative to platinum print and the other will be medium format/4×5/8×10 traditional black and white negatives to platinum printing.  Whats so different when using actual negatives, well how about selenium toning the negatives for contrast control in the print.  Or pushing and pulling the shots just for the platinum print process.  This is the part were you dear reader say, “Carlos that sounds crazy, fun, but crazy.”  I just quietly nod.  Here is an example from my student and newly addicted platinum printer Hiroshi Suzuki.  This is his first completed print and I must say, I’m a pretty good teacher.  He has gone on to make more, and I’m excited to see what he and all of you come up with.  Expect and lookout for the classes in the Fall 2012 schedule.

Best – C.

George Eastman’s Kodak Creation

Due to the recent sad news of Kodak filing for bankruptcy, here is a great PBS video that reminds us of the great rise of Kodak, the obstacles overcome, and the urgency for for experimentation in photography and in business.  Historically interesting and overall inspiring, I hope you enjoy this George Eastman video as much as did.

Favorite Line is in part 2: Photography, “a little black box held by someone you knew.”

Just off the Heels of Rayko’s Plastic Camera Show, I found this:

Michelle Bates, 2010′s featured artist in the Rayko Plastic Camera Show recently gave a TED talk.  If you don’t know Bates, you don’t know plastic cameras as she is the official spokesperson for the medium.  I was lucky enough to talk with her last year and help her with some scans for a future project which I cannot mention here but yes it involved plastic cameras.  Enjoy everyone and if you were not at the show, you should definitely check out Rayko’s Plastic Camera Show in San Francisco which is up now!  It’s real life Instagram. Ha.

Mark Your Calendar iPhone Shooters!

iPhotomania, the app company that brought us Touch Retouch, is bringing us something amazing on January 17th. The new app is called AntiCrop and as the name denotes, it is for uncropping images.  Or actually extending the canvas of your image, then smartly cloning and healing the newly added area.  Those of you familiar with Photoshop CS5 know content aware fill can be used to do this, but this has never been available on the iphone until now.  Watch the video below for a demo, and if you say, “Carlos I have CS5, and don’t know what content aware fill is?”  You should take my photoshop workshop at Rayko Photo Center to realize its vast potential.  Also, iphotomania, please make a free form transform or perspective correction app please.  Have fun out there!

Happy 2012 Photo Followers!

(Source: tastefullyoffensive, via missredaholic)

This is just a friendly reminder to those of you creative photographers out there, “keep it fun in 2012.”  So many creative people I meet take their artwork way too seriously.  Remember, that a big part of art is enrichment.  For your life in its creation, and for those that chose to enjoy what you’ve created.  It’s easy to lose sight and I’ve been guilty of this as well so, my biggest resolution of 2012 is to actively try to keep photography fun!

Who’s with me?
